The postponed European Shogi Championship/World Open Shogi Championship (ESC/WOSC) was held in Minsk, Belarus, between August 19th and 22nd 2021. Though the Covid-19 travel restrictions less players were able to participate, but thanks to the organizers the event was a great success. The top games were broadcasted live and board 1 was with live video coverage as well.
In the final of the ESC the two top rated European players fought for the title. Sergey Korchitsky (BY) secured his second European championship title by beating Vincent Tanyan (BY). 3rd place was taken by Anton Starykevich (BY) by beating Russian youngster Denis Titov (RU).
Sergey Korchitsky (BY) continued his winning streak in the WOSC and won all his games in an impressive manner. Anton Starykevich (BY) and Vincent Tanyan (BY) switched places compared to the ESC and both finished with 7 points. 67 players participated in the WOSC.
Anton Starykevich (BY) was too fast for everyone at the blitz tournament and he won all games. Second became Anton Mahin (BY) ahead of Denis Titov (RU).
The team tournament was won by the international ‘Dream Team’ (Peter Shcheslionok (BY), Thomas Pfaffel (AT), Boris Savich (BY)), who won all their matches and individual games. ‘Russia 3’ (Dmitry Rodin, Vladimir Medvedev, Danila Biryukov) finished on second place and team ‘We Tried’ (Anton Mahin (BY), Sergey Matmusaev (BY), Victor Balabhai (RU)) became third.
